Saturday 21st December - AcoustiCity Winter Solstice/Christmas Party

A departure from the normal AcoustiCity format with a double headline from two superb artists, Roots Quartet and Springett Booth. Sarah Springett celebrated her 22nd birthday on the evening with a cake, and truly unique rendition of Happy Birthday by Jason on bass!

Springett Booth are the superb songwriting partnership of vocalist Sarah Springett & guitarist and vocalist David Booth. Sarah originally trained as a dancer, but after graduating in Musical Theatre was already steering towards music. Enter David Booth, whose solo album 'Open Season' had already been released. Liking what she heard Sarah approached him for help with her own songs, and they soon realised that a songwriting partnership was the obvious next step.

Their performance as support to Angelou at AcoustiCity in June was powerful and confident right from the first note. The single, Only One was instantly memorable as was the closing song, Give Me a Moment. Not only were we impressed, but the audience reaction was amazing so we knew we had to invite them to do a headline. It is wonderful to meet such genuinely friendly performers and songwriters living so close that also have the talent to go all the way with their music.

Tonight they were joined by Jason Bangers, a phenomenally talented bass player and drummer who is friends to both Springett Booth and James and Darren AcoustiCity. It was a great party!

Roots Quartet 8.30pm - 9.30pm

The first half of tonight's show was given over entirely to Roots Quartet.

Based around the sometimes intricate, often sublimely simple vocal harmonies of Yvette Staelens and Michelle Hicks, their shows regularly feature a variety of guest musicians drawn from a large musical family across the UK. Despite the name though, there have never been more than three full time members in the band.

They now live in a remote farmhouse on the edge of the Somerset Levels which also acts as HQ for their own record label, RQ Records. There are few towns in the UK they haven't played other than Colchester so tonight was a fabulous start to the evening.
